AAA uncovered the shocking truth about self-driving cars: people are terrified of them. Just over 80 percent of women surveyed, and 67 percent of men said they would be afraid of riding in a self-driving car (and let's face it, the number for men is only lower because they're too proud to admit when they're scared).

This means automakers are going to have a hard sell to make when the first self-driving vehicles become available -- and most major automakers are working to develop the technology.

Self-driving cars can be a very good thing, too. Celebrity scientist Bill Nye says self-driving cars are a prerequisite to flying cars. It's 2016 -- we want our flying cars already!

The AAA survey isn't all dismal however, and shows a clear path by which self-driving cars can slowly earn our trust.

Drivers whose cars have "semi-autonomous" driver aids, like lane keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking were much more likely to accept self-driving cars. That means as advanced features become more widely available, more people will trust delegating increasing levels of responsibility to their vehicles.
