The Mythbusters received a myth that it is actually faster to stay in one lane than to switch lanes and try to pass in heavy traffic.

This should be an easy one to figure out.

The answer they came up with is simple, yet complicated.

In travelling from San Francisco to San Jose, the car that was allowed to change lanes always arrived faster than the car that stuck to one lane.

However.

The lane-sticking cars were only a few minutes behind. The fastest time, for the lane-switching car, was 1 hour and 16 minutes, while the slowest lane-sticking car was 1 hour and 33 minutes. The second fastest car was only three minutes behind.

So, switching lanes in heavy traffic does get you to your destination faster, but not much faster, and it's more dangerous and stressful.
