It's the worst case scenario: you're on a steep hill when your brakes suddenly give out. You're picking up speed. What do you do?

The first thing you should do, before you've build up speed, is shift down into a lower gear. This will let the engine slow the car for you. Then, utilize your parking brake, lightly pulling on it to gradually decrease speed. Do not pull up on it sharply like you're trying to do a bootlegger's turn, because you will skid, like you're doing a bootlegger's turn.

Be sure to also pump the brakes, if there is any connection still being made. You may not have lost brakes completely.

Of course, this is Bear Grylls, who must make an extreme, dangerous show of everything. If nothing else is working, and it is safe to do so, weaving can reduce your speed, as can grinding the car up against the guardrail or off-road embankment.

And don't forget to put on your emergency four-way flashers.

Of course, the best way to stay safe is to make sure your brakes don't fail in the first place. With regular maintenance from LCM Used Car Center's service center, you significantly increase the reliability of your vehicle.
