Oversteer is when a vehicle turns more than was intended. If the tail slides out or you actually spin completely around, you are experiencing oversteer. This happens when the rear wheels of your vehicle have lost traction before the front ones.
Understeer is more or less the opposite. If you try to make a sharp turn and your vehicle goes wide of your intended path, you are dealing with understeer. This happens more commonly in front-wheel-drive cars, while oversteer is more likely to happen in a rear-wheel-drive. However, either situation can happen with either drivetrain.
