According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 2015 Fuel Economy Guide, there are several things you can be doing to improve your gas mileage, regardless of your vehicle's baseline mpg rating.

One is combining trips. Say you have to go to the grocery store, and the bank, and pick up your kids from school. If you pick up your kids, drive home, go to the store hours later, and then decide to put off the bank until tomorrow, you could be using twice as much gasoline than if you combined them all into one big trip, even if you drove the same total distance.

This is because engines run more efficiently once they are warmed up.

The EPA notes, however, that this doesn't mean you should idle your car to warm the engine. Idling uses more fuel and creates more pollution than driving on a cold engine.

Another tip is keeping your car well-maintained. Properly inflated, balanced, and aligned tires improve fuel economy, as does using the correct motor oil, and making needed repairs. Visit LCM Used Car Center for auto service in East Petersburg, PA.
