Here on our blog, we like to supply our readers with the best tips and tricks when it comes to all things automotive. This time around rather than covering car seat safety tips as we did last month, we thought we'd go over what you do with a car seat once all of the kiddos have grown up. Before tossing it for good, consider the option of recycling first.

Your first instinct might be to take the seat and simply send it out with the garbage. Since nearly 12 million car seats are purchased by Americans annually, this amounts to a lot of materials in landfills that are not actually biodegradable. Therefore, there is a much better way to go about it that isn't so harmful to the environment.

After consulting Consumer Reports, we learned there are numerous parts of a car seat that can in fact be recycled. All you have to do is simply contact your local Public Works department in the greater Lancaster, PA area. They will be able to tell you which types of plastic are recyclable, since each one varies in material. For example a seat that includes a metal molding would not be.

There are also car-seat recycling programs in various areas that will collect car seats and properly dispose of them for you. Simply check out www.consumerreports.org for a full listening of where the closest recycling initiatives are taking place.

If you have additional questions of how to properly dispose of a car seat, feel free to ask any of our friendly staff members here at our LCM Used Car Center. We'd be happy to answer your questions and assist you in exploring what our current used car lineup has to offer!
