As we approach July 4th, a time to celebrate the birth of America, many people plan to spend it with family and friends to enjoy camping, barbeques, fireworks and other outdoor activities. This of course means it will be a busy time for travel as well. All of us here at LCM Used Car Center thought it would be fun to share some travel trends that occur during this busy holiday.
AAA Travel made some interesting projections about just how many people will be on the roads this Independence Day. They determined that almost 41 million Americans will be traveling 50 miles or more to celebrate the holiday. Of these travelers, 84 percent will be traveling by automobile, perhaps even in a used car.
When looking at air travel, it is projected that this will increase slightly from the 3.06 million people recorded last year to 3.07 million this year. A majority of travelers, 32 percent, are most likely choosing Wednesday, July 3rd as the day to depart, with about 38 percent returning Sunday, July 7th.
Believe it or not, Independence Day is actually the busiest travel holiday of the summer, beating out Memorial Day by about six million. So just how far are people traveling to have a little patriotic fun? AAA predicts the average traveler will go about 313 miles round trip, with a surprising 38 percent that will return that day. In total, they will spend about $747 while celebrating.
