Since its summer, a time for boating, adventures and home improvement projects, you'll most likely be doing some heavy hauling. This is why all of us at LCM Used Car Center thought it would be the perfect opportunity to go over some important trailer towing safety tips here on our blog. After all, you never can be too safe when hauling some precious cargo behind your vehicle.

For starters, we encourage you to get to know your trailer. Familiarize yourself with stats like tow rating, tongue weight and weight of the trailer, all of which can be easily found in the owner's manual.

Next you should evaluate the hitch ball of your trailer to determine if it's the correct size. You don't want the trailer to pop off if it's too small. It's also a good idea to consider safety chains in the event that the trailer ever does detach.

Another element to consider is your driving technique while hauling a trailer. Be sure to allow more wiggle room between your pickup and other vehicles on the road to leave extra time for braking. Also be mindful of turning later and sharper on a curve, squaring it off to prevent the trailer from swaying. Backing up can be tricky as well. We suggest putting your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel and turning it the direction you want the trailer to move.

With that being said, we advise that your trailer has electronic brakes with the accompanying controller in your truck's cabin. When it comes to purchasing one, be sure to buy one that is of good quality and will last longer.

There you have it folks, a few handy tips that can assist you during your future hauling endeavors. Of course to make this all possible, you'll need a reliable pickup first.
