Believe it or not, Independance Day Weekend marks the beginning of what the Federal Bureau of Investigation refers to as "car theft season." That said, we here at LCM Used Car Center, serving the greater Lancaster, PA area, are here to give you some tips on protecting your car from would-be thieves.

First, if you're planning on attending any summer parties or barbeques in an area that you're not familiar with, simply take a cab to and from the party. Leaving your car unattended in an area that you're not familiar with is never a good idea.

If you do have to leave your car in an area that you're not familiar with, make sure to do so in a well-lit and populated area. Busy parking lots, parking garages, and other public areas are great choices where thieves will quickly attract attention to themselves.

Always double check that your doors are locked and your windows are rolled up. And if you have to leave your car unattended in an area that you're not familiar with all day, never leave a spare key in the vehicle or taped under a bumper. These are things that car thieves look for.

And while we're on the subject of things that car thieves will look for, be sure not to store anything valuable in your car. Thieves have a sense for what valuable belongings look like when they're crudely hidden under a blanket or stuffed under a seat.

Finally, consider installing a GPS unit in your car. Many late-model used cars that LCM Used Car Center sells at 5250 Main Street in East Petersburg comes with GPS and other antitheft systems already installed, while others are ready to have them put in too.
