Myths About Motor Oil

Motor oil is obviously very important to the operation of your vehicle, but there are a lot of myths about this crucial element that simply are not true. Here are some of the more common.

Myth #1: You Need to Change Your Oil Every 3,000 Miles

There was a time when this myth was true, but vehicles and motor oil have changed since then. Most newer vehicles can go 7,000 miles or even longer before they need an oil change. Look at your engine oil life monitor if you want to know when it's time to change your oil.

Myth #2: Black Oil Needs to be Changed

Many modern motor oils clean engines, so the black color just means it's doing its job.

Myth #3: You Don't Need to Change Your Oil Filter Along With Your Oil

When you have your oil changed, you should absolutely change your oil filter. Changing your filter keeps contaminants that are trapped in it from getting into your new oil and shortening its lifespan.

Modern motor oil doesn't require as much maintenance as oil from several decades ago, but it still needs to be changed periodically. When that time comes, visit our service center here at LCM Used Car Center to have it changed.
