How to Wear Your Safety Belt for Proper Restraint

Today, safety belts are a part of our routine when we get inside of our vehicles. They save lives and can help you avoid serious injury if worn properly. Their effectiveness, though, depends on proper use and fit. If you aren't wearing your safety belt correctly it may not provide adequate protection. Here are some tips on how to wear your safety belt:

  • The first step is to make sure that you are sitting up straight with your back firmly against the back of your seat.
  • Next, you place the lap belt snugly across the lower part of your hips. Make sure that it does not ride up onto your abdomen.
  • Fasten the safety belt and make sure that there isn't too much slack. A loose safety belt may cause you to slam against the inside of your car in a collision.
  • Never place the shoulder strap under your arm or behind your back. This is not proper way to restrain yourself and could cause injury.
