Tips on Being a Defensive Driver

Defensive driving is a style of driving that helps you defend yourself against possible automobile accidents caused by other drivers and inclement weather. Incorporating defensive driving techniques can keep you safe on the road. It's important to know that you cannot control other people's driving, so staying focused and being in control of your driving is key.

Avoid dangers on the road with these defensive driving tips:

  • Look ahead for the unexpected. Be aware of what the other drivers around you are doing by checking your mirrors frequently.
  • Control your speed. Going too fast makes it harder to control your vehicle and it takes longer for it to stop.
  • Maintain a proper following distance from the vehicle in front of you. This gives you enough time to stop abruptly.
  • Drive appropriately for the weather and/or road conditions.

Safe driving techniques should be used every time you get behind the wheel. Don’t forget your safety belt!
